Dot MOBI Domain Names

More and more people use mobile devices to access web content, so the need for mobile-friendly websites is steadily growing. To fulfill this demand, the entity that supervises the universal domain name extensions, ICANN, established the .MOBI domain extension in 2005. The first registrations were started in September 2006, and the concept behind this domain name extension is that all websites that use it have to comply with special terms. In other words, all dot MOBI websites are required to be designed to be viewed properly by mobile devices in agreement with the so-called “MWI Best Practices for mobile content” formulated by the W3C Mobile Web Initiative (MWI) in collaboration with the dot MOBI Registry. These have to do with how a page is being navigated, the way it is being displayed (form and size), and so on.

The restrictions have raised some questions given the fact that the universal domain extension is the only one that specifies what devices ought to be able to access a website and the way in which this must happen, breaking the so-called principles of device independence, according to which a website should be designed in such a way as to be accessed by the majority of browsers and devices, be they mobile or stationary.
